Itinerary
ITINERARY:
The day begins early with a transfer to the train station for your journey to Machu Picchu. At kilometer 104, we disembark, pass through the checkpoint, and begin our hike on the real Inca trail, passing through Chachabamba. Following the ancient Inca path, we ascend through the tropical cloud forest and climb above the roaring Urubamba River. As you walk, all you need to carry is a backpack.
An initially challenging ascent is replaced by satisfaction when we reach Wiñay Wayna, where we’ll take a lunch break before joining what is generally considered the most spectacular part of the real Inca Trail. The real Inca trail contours through the fascinating cloud forest, leading to Inti Puncu, ‘the Sun Gate,’ and our first glimpse of Machu Picchu.
Then we’ll arrive at Aguas Calientes and give ourselves a real break. After lunch, we’ll rest at the hotel so that the next day, after breakfast, we’ll hike up to the Machu Picchu llaqta and learn its history alongside our official tour guide. After enjoying this architectural wonder, we’ll descend back to the town of Machu Picchu to check out and then return to Cusco.

During the journey, you’ll be able to observe the Sacred Valley of the Incas, farmlands, and majestic snow-capped peaks. In Ollantaytambo, we’ll board the train that will take you to kilometer 104, approximately a 1-hour journey. We’ll cross the bridge over the Urubamba River or Willkamayu, which translates from Quechua as “Sacred River,” which was very important to them. Upon reaching the checkpoint, identification documents must be shown, whether passport, foreigner ID card, or national ID card. A 15-minute walk will take you to the archaeological site of Chachabamba and Choquesuysuy, hidden in the semi-tropical forest. After visiting, we’ll start the hike through ascending stairs until reaching the next location on the trail. After 4 hours of hiking, we’ll reach Wiñaywayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), which shows a perfect example of Inca agriculture, as along its slopes lie a large number of circular terraces, where the Incas cultivated different agricultural products. The name Wiñaywayna comes from a beautiful orchid abundant in the area, which means “Eternally Young” in Spanish, and it has more than 20 buildings, one of which is the Temple of the Rainbow, also known as the Temple of Fertility. The visit will last approximately 1 hour, after which we’ll enjoy a boxed lunch to replenish energy and continue until we reach the Wiñaywayna checkpoint.
